How to choose the best exterior paint

Picking a color to paint the exterior of your house can be a very confusing and stressful job, you sit there, and when you think you have found the right color, you see another beautiful one and on and on it goes. You have to know however that not all colors can be suitable for the exterior of a house. Knowing this and some other things would help streamline the selection process and make this daunting and confusing task relatively easy for you. Here are things you should look out for that would go a long way in helping you choose the best exterior paint.

  • The durability of the paint: As you are looking to paint your homes exterior; the outside part of your house, it is essential to pick a very durable paint- you don’t want to have to repaint every two years. That would suck! To prevent this, when picking out paint, check the label thoroughly. These are some of the things you should be on the lookout for:
  • Check if it is both a paint and a primer
  • Check if it has UV protection
  • Check if it is mold and mildew resistant
  • Check if it stains resistant
  • Check if it is fade resistant and finally,
  • Check if it has a one-coat coverage

If your paint meets those criteria, then you are good to go. A very durable one should last you for up to 10 years.

  • Consider the architectural details of your house: Architectural details that are long lasting like the roof, stonework- if any, columns, window and door trim should be considered before choosing an exterior paint. You don’t want to pick a paint color that would clash with the color of these details. You should be on the lookout for colors that would accentuate the features and give your house an elegant look.
  • Consider your neighborhood: If there’s a particular pattern of painting the exterior of houses in your neighborhood, you should consider painting your home in accordance with them. You can add your touch by changing some things here and there, but it is not advisable to deviate from the pattern. This is important because in the future if you want to sell your property, it might affect the offers for sale you might receive.
  • Go for cool and calm colors that would accentuate the features of your house: It is not advisable to use loud and shouty colors for the exterior part of your home. Get cool shades of colors; like green that would complement nature. You don’t want to be the neighbor in the hideous pink house.

Lastly, your house is your personal space, go for what you love, consult magazines, ask for help from a designer. Also, if by chance your neighborhood is the kind that uses bright colors and you happen to like them then, by all means, use a bright color for painting the exterior of your home. The main goal is to pick something you see yourself living in and to have fun!
